MOSHE BENARROCHE : Moroccan-Israeli Jewish-Amazigh Poet
Moshe Benarroche, an Israeli-Amazigh poet, born in Tetuan, Morocco, in 1959, is one of the first Jews of North Africa who has publically acknowledged the Amazigh connection to Sephardic Jews (Jews of former Sefardia, i.e., Spain). In an interview, conducted by Karen Alkalay-Gut, Benarroche explains: Before the Arab conquest of Morocco, there was complete tolerance of any cult in the country. Many Amazigh tribes converted to Judaism and Christianity (St. Augustine was an Amazigh), and probably all the Jews from Morocco and Spain are of Amazigh descent.... Full story

Preparatory comitee of the Amazigh youth congress
Dear militants,
As you know, a crisis is now shaking the various components and instances of the Amazigh movement, due to the battering of Arabism and the intensification of the racist policy of discrimination and exclusion of all the elements of Amazighness, either linguistic or socio-economic and political ones.
In this context, and after extensive discussions between the activist Amazigh youth throughout the world, it was decided to organize a Amazigh youth congress, to debate about the situation, and to infuse a new dynamic in our movement. Currently many preparatory committees are being established throughout the world.

The Moroccan elections of 12 June 2009
The recent Moroccan elections of 2007 saw the highest rate of abstention in the Moroccan history, which reached 80% if one accounts the white votes. Several interpretations of this political rejection by Moroccans, was given by analysts. It goes from the multitude of political parties (more than 36 parties but of the same ideological color) to the wear of the former Arabo-Islamic speech and the later Islamist speech and their arrival at an impasse without issue. This probably prompted the Makhzen –according to some political analysts- to give a birth to new political party called PAM (Party for authenticity and modernity) -lead by a friend of the king, as a son-in-law of the former king has led previously the independent party- . This new party, has added a “new concept” –compare to the old parties- at the Moroccan political scene. He opposes the Islamists but never opposed to their doctrine, he opposed the Chiite doctrine but not to the Shiites, he chooses Amazigh word "Tamghribite" to express its tendency: "The Moroccan" a return to Moroccan values, but without never saying a return to no Arab values that his former counterpart had imposed to Morocco at the expense of Amazigh values. It's just a return to the Arab values -probably because it believes that morocco is overzealous in importing Arab values! And it's time now to moderate with a few Amazigh values! Position or completely as an alternative to Amazigh speech and give some breathe to worn arabo-islamiste speech without uproot it.
Based on this change or that new political scene in Morocco, what is your opinion as Moroccan or from Moroccan origin, you will participate in the forthcoming elections of 12 June? Express yourself... here

Morocco : it's too late ..
Morocco has recently decided to sever ties with Iran, but what is the rationale of this surprising move? As we can read and listen it in mainstream media, this North African country is very worried about the spreading of Shiism, the Iranian way of practicing Islam, among its population. Do you really belief this account? Sceptical as always, I could not agree less. Why? For the Moroccan regime, as always, has totally missed the bus again. Actually, we are very used to this hothead behaviour. ... Full story

The Mediterranean ! We are the Lords.
It is easy to see that we are living in a time of rapid and radical change. It is much less easy to clasp the truth that such change will inevitably affect the nature of those historical disciplines that both, reflect the collective memory of the Mediterranean and help to shape it. Modes and categories inherited from the past no longer seem to fit the reality experienced by the new generation. ... Full story

30 years of the "Berber Spring” in Algeria (20.4): North Africa's indigenous people are still waiting for recognition of their culture
Berbers throughout the world will this weekend be remembering the crushing of the "Berber Spring” in Algeria in 1980 and the dead of the "Black Spring” of 2001. "The Berbers are still waiting for the recognition of their language and culture. But to the present day the governments of the Arab national states in north Africa are refusing this ethnic group the same rights as those of the Arabs”, criticised the Africa consultant of the Society for Threatened Peoples STP (Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker GfbV), Ulrich Delius, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the crushing of the peaceful protest demonstration of the indigenous people (20th April).... Berber languages "threatened in Morocco, Algeria"
afrol News, 31 March - A new report about the world's most threatened languages especially highlights the languages of the indigenous Berber people in Morocco and Algeria. Despite constituting around 50 percent of the population, their languages have been discriminated against and ignored.
The Germany-based Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV) in a 111-page report about threatened languages all around the world - which comes together with teaching materials to save such languages - has a special focus on Berber languages, or Tamazight as it is locally known.

Sounds from North Africa
Introduction: Egypt has always been regarded by the Egyptians as the cradle of the world "Oummou ddouniya. And by the "Arab world" as the cradle of ideologies that have always ignited it for 50 years : from Arab nationalism to today Islamism. And by the world as the leader and the door of the Arab world. Now look on the ground, Israel did not choose Egypt to make peace than no one had imagined? the same Egypt that ignited arabs a few years ago to throw all the Jews in the Mediterranean. Obama did not choose Cairo and not Rabat or Algiers to make his historic speech for the Arab and Muslim world that any American president ever did? Hadn’t he chosen, Cairo and not Rabat or Algiers, where a step toward tolerance, democracy and freedom of the press is really crossed over to a Middle East where people are just seeking elections -not yet fair ones- but just elections and sometimes even the women’s right to drive a simple car (...) On September 11, is the majority of terrorists from the middle east and just after it was Moroccans, Tunisians, Algerians and even Nigerians and never more Middle Eastern? (..). Egypt Has not built a wall that separates it from its own yesterday Arab brothers in Gaza? a wall that Israel hasn’t even built, too deeply to prevent even the subway contacts! (..) Cairo knows how and when to throw fire and water in the Muslim world, it had done before and after Camp David contract without harm alleging it knows handling the ropes. But behind those ropes, there is neither military power nor economic nor advanced technology? There is a simple Arabo-Islamist ideology! But soon and later this situation will still be valid after this North African identity raising that challenged that ideology? We listen here a viewpoint analyst from elsewhere, the Israeli civil society. It is an article published in the Israeli newspaper "The Jerusalem Report" last week; we republish it for North Africans readers given its importance and timeliness. A simple setting that ignores the North Africans, but in the international observer’s eyes is deeply strategic: why did all the peoples of North Africa -without exception- support the football Algerian National team against Egypt and not "Oummou ddouniya? ..... Sounds from North Africa
By Bruce Maddy-Weitzman

WHEN LOOKING AT REGIONAL developments and how they might affect their own lives, Israelis understandably tend to fix their gaze eastward. Ironically, since the end of the state of war between Egypt and Israel in 1979, Israelis have become generally indifferent towards the goings-on along the Nile. This is even more the case with regard to events further west, in Algeria and Morocco, the “core” states of North Africa. ... Full story

Elections in Algeria: Bouteflika Wins, Legitimacy Loses
Boutefliqa (Ap photo)
On April 9, Algerians go to the polls to elect a head of state. A constitutional amendment engineered by two-term President Abdulaziz Bouteflika in November 2008 allows the septuagenarian to vie for a third term. Running with no credible opponents -- and unopposed by the military and security services (DRS) -- there is little doubt he will be reelected. Although Bouteflika's ongoing tenure represents continuity in Algiers, it will not enhance the country's stability. Instead, for a largely disaffected burgeoning youth, the nature of this election will further erode confidence in an already shaky system, a development that could impact local U.S. business interests and strengthen al-Qaeda's presence in the Maghreb (northwest Africa).
