The sites listed below offer a hodgepodge of information--from archaeological, biographical, and historical to political and touristy. The sites range from the basic for those with no knowledge of these countries to more advanced, useful to researchers since they contain statistical information or important historical documents.

ALGERIA

  • Accords avec l'Algérie. Accords bilatéraux franco-algerienne.
  • AdmiNet: Algeria, many resource links and contact information for Algerian embassy in France.
  • Ahmed Taleb Ibrahimi Biography of the former minister and 1999 presidential candidate.
  • Algeria. Sections to check out is Books and Periodicals, which list bibliographical information on Algeria.
  • Algeria Bibliographical information of documents and works on Algeria (historical, beginning with 16th century).
  • Algérie. Demographic information. Includes map, image of national seal, and national anthem.
  • Algérie. Information on the environment, culture, the economy, youth, and the land. In French, loads of images.
  • Algérie mon beau pays perdu. While this is a personal site, it could be of interest to researchers. It was created by a pieds-noir who returned to France in 1982, and whose father returned in 1992. The author did leave Algeria just prior to independence, but returned two years later in 1964. The site includes old photos of Algeria from the 19th century.
  • Algerien: Reisemedizin. Health information on Algeria. In German.
  • An MBendi Profile: Algeria Country Profile.
  • ANP-Algeria. Non-transparent, anti-military/government propaganda site. In Arabic, English, and French.
  • Argelia Information on the social, military, economic, socio-political, and demographic issues of Algeria. Information, also on conflicts and peace processes. In Spanish. From the Centro de Investigación para la Paz (center of investigation for peace).
  • Argelia Article analyzing the different factors (colonialization, religion, the economy, etc.) involved in the civil strife from 1992, covering up to 1997. Author is Laurence Thieux, investigator for CIP. In Spanish.
  • Between Ballots and Bullets, by William Quandt (1998). First chapter is posted, along with the Table of Contents.
  • Cerd 1216-97-08-21 Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination's invitation to Algeria (document), August 1997. In French.
  • Chronologie de la guerre d'Algerie.
  • Dalla delibera del Consiglio della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell'11 Febbraio 1998. Article on Salima Ghezali and her human rights movement. In Italian.
  • Elections in Algeria. This site's one asset is the list of political parties in Algeria. Updated in June 1999.
  • Evolution of the Women's Movement in Contemporary Algeria : Organization. Objectives and Prospects, by C. Bouatta. Summary of paper.
  • Fondation et Institut Hocine Ait Ahmed: cree pour mettre en ligne tous les articles et interviews de Hocine Ait Ahmed des exclusivites, et qui peux aide aussi a mieux comprendre

  • Grammar of Algeria Darja. Possibly the only site with such information in English. Still developing, but currently offers the Phonetics of Darja, a treatment of verbs, nouns, adjectives, numbers, pronouns, and prepositions, as well as a look at foreign borrowings. Future information includes a phoneme analysis of Darja.
  • The history of torture in Algeria. While this site looks principally at the use of torture in Algeria from colonialization to the present, it also has an extensive, alphabetical listing of links to information on the web on any subject concerning Algeria.
  • IDPs in Algeria: profile summary, causes and background of displacement, population profile and figures, information on physical security and freedom of movement, subsistence needs, humanitarian, access, and national and international responses. Completed December 2000. From the Global IDP (internally displaced persons) Project.
  • Jacques Derrida: Site dedicated to the Algerian-born philosopher (b. 1930). Biography and bibliography, texts and testimonies, forum and links. Jacques Derrida is a noted figure of Algerian philosophical thought, which includes great thinkers from St. Augustine of Hippo to Albert Camus.
  • Jugurtha. Biography of the Numidian king.
  • Khalida. Biography of Khalida Messaoudi, activist and member of the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD). In Italien.
  • L'histoire de L'Algérie. History of Algeria from prehistoric times through the advent of Islam.
  • L'usage du français est menacé, January 3, 1997. Opinion piece: "La loi interdisant l'usage d'une autre langue que l'arabe dans les activités publiques et l'enseignement, à compter de juillet 1998, soulève inquiétudes et polémiques, chez les intellectuels mais aussi chez les opérateurs économiques."
  • LUSS in Algeria: Caving in the West. While much of the information is outdated (from 1985), it is useful for those interested in expeditions to the caves of Algeria.
  • L'Histoire du Peuple Algerien. The History of the Algerian people in pictures. Offers photos of early Algerian leaders, nationalists, and political incidents.
  • Messali El Hadj. Biography of the Algerian revolutionary.
  • Miftah Shamali- Algeria. Packed with information. Details on many of Algeria's cities, as well as archaeological sites. Includes possible pertinent tourist information (last updated in May 1997).
  • Musée des Antiquites. Site for the oldest museum in Algeria and Africa, inaugurated in 1897. In French.
  • Musée National des Arts et des Traditions Populaires. Offers a view of the museums' collections.
  • Neue Solidarität 14/1998: Algerien: Internationale Kommission muB Massaker untersuchen. Interview with Dr. Abdelhamid Brahimi, former Algerian minister. In German.
  • The St. Egidio Platform for a Peaceful Solution of the Algerian Crisis. Site of USIP (United States Institute of Peace).
  • The Unreached Peoples Prayer Profiles. Evangelical site on the Kabyles. Includes description of the people and statistical information.

    NORTH AFRICA/AFRICA

  • African Newspapers in the Newspaper Library, at the Center for African Studies, Stanford University. Alphabetical by country. Some newspapers from the 19th century listed.
  • The Avalon Project at the Yale Law School: Treaties with the Barbary Powers, 1786-1836.
  • Berber: Linguistic "Substratum" of North African Arabic, by Professor Ernest N. McCarus, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs (Jan/Feb 1995, Pg. 31).
  • Berber Tamazight in Spain: deals with the city colonies, Melilla and Ceuta, located on the Mediterranean coast in northern Morocco.
  • Bienvenue sur le site web de Arav Benyounès. Contains writings by the Amazigh writer on various subjects dealing with the Amazigh. Articles in French and Tamazight. Also a French-Tamazight dictionary.
  • Book Review. The Berbers by Michael Brett and Elizabeth Fentress, reviewed by Dr. Helene E. Hagan, an anthropologist who is also an Amazigh (Berber).
  • Historical Text Archive: Africa. Includes a few historical documents.
  • Tazzla Institute for Cultural Diversity. A non-profit, charitable and educational organization, which conducts research on indigenous people of North America and North Africa, and produces Public Access Television documentaries and program.
